What is a Security Key for a wireless internet connection?

I just bought a new Dell laptop that has an internal wireless card. Now I have a desk top directly plugged into a 2WIRE gismo --- and when I boot up the laptop -- it says that it sees this 2 WIRE thing --- but asks for a Security Key --- read all of the literature that came with the 2 WIRE --- but can find no reference to this thing. HELP. Thanks.

A security Key is a 40 digit hexidecimal code that you enter as 10 digits normally to be able to log onto a wireless network. This means that whomever set up your? wireless connection set it up using WEP or WAP security. You will need to know the key code to put it in when the network ask for the security code. If htis is your network and you have the wireless router in your house/work you should be able to connect into the router and see or change the Security Code. Open up internet Explorer and type in (Usually but not always)192.168.1.1 which is the routers IP address and then it will ask for a password to get into the routers system. If you set it up you should know the password or if you just opened up the box and installed it then it most likely does not have a password. If this is the case then all you have to do is hit enter, do not change the administrator name or enter a password. Then go into the Wireless security and look for the security code. If htis is not your wireless router that you are trying to connect to then remember that they are starting to bust people for using others internet connection for stealing. If htis is your Wireless router and all else fails you should be able to call 2Wires customer service and they will walk you through fixing and connecting your laptop. Hope this helps.

There are many standards of modulation. The most commonly used types are:

Enable WEP, wired equivalent privacy encryption provides security to WLANS. The WEP keys encrypt the data stream.

Turning on WPA encryption. The Wi-Fi protected access adds on the authentication and encryption features WEP explained above.

TKIP, Temporal Key Integrity Protocol covers up for the encryption weaknesses of WEP.

WPA2 protection is the latest one and provides high level of protection.

Enable wireless MAC Address filtering.

WEP Encryption length

The WEP encryption is based on a combination of secret user keys and system generated values. The key encrypts and de-encrypts the data that is transferred between the access points and the clients. There are two versions:

The earlier version supported 40-bit encryption; the key length was 40 bits and 24 additional bits of system generated data, thus a total of 64 bits.

Easy decoding of 40 bit WEP encryption encouraged vendors to go in for 128-bit encryption. 128-bit encryption has a key length of 104 bits.

Antenna Type

The omni directional antenna of routers broadcast 360degrees around the router. Position them in such a way that you can make the most of the radiating signals.

External antennas can add strength significantly, thus giving a wider range and increased network performance when compared with the performance of in-built antennas.

Detachable antennas disable 802.11a lower band communications when detached. On attaching the antenna the lower band is enabled. Thus they can be screwed into the device and can be upgraded easily.

The third type is the internal integrated antennas. These antennas are built-in, and hence cannot be changed or directed.
