I absolutely HATE the keyboard that came with my Dell computer. What kind should I get? Shoud I get an ergonomic one?

Kindle 2 Decal, Sticker or Skin?  Are there any differences between a decal or skin for the Kindle 2?  Why you need one - protection is only part of it, the decorative aspects are also important.

First, there are no differences between a decal, sticker or skin.  They are just different names for the same product.  It is possible that the term "skin" suggests a thinner product than "decal", or "sticker".   Everybody knows how thick a bumper sticker is, so if you use the word skin, it sounds like it isn't as thick.   Modern skins for electronic devices like the Kindle 2 are made from the latest vinyls available, so they actually are much thinner than previous types that were using automotive lettering vinyl.  These new types of vinyl also have new adhesives, that are much easier to apply to delicate electronics.  First-generation electronic skins were difficult to apply, especially since it wasn't possible to do a "wet" application (as on a car), and hard to get lined up just right on the device.  These old types were almost impossible to remove, once installed.  You risked scratching or damaging your device trying to remove the skin.

These new vinyls don't have any installation problems - the adhesive isn't as difficult to work with as the old kind.   Once you have your skin situated on your device, it is now possible to rearrange it by peeling the skin carefully and reapplying.   This is what is meant by "repositionable" adhesives.  Then, once you have the skin lined up exactly where you want it to be, simply smooth it down into place with a soft cloth.  The latest adhesives also provide a "bubble-fee" application, meaning any air bubbles get channelled safely away, so you are left with a perfectly flat, even, bubble-free skin.

The second reason to add a Kindle 2 skin is the decorative aspect.   Straight out of the box, a plain white device isn't visually interesting, and is also liable to get scratched during daily use.  There are so many designs available now, yours won't look like every other Kindle 2. You will find abstract, colorful designs, images of famous artworks, photos showcasing the natural world, characters from literature - there are literally thousands of possible designs.  Many Kindle 2 skins feature a main design on the back case, and a variation or continuation on the front.   Custom-designed skins are also careful not to present a visual distraction around the keyboard.

How to clean a laptop keyboard?

I've got an Acer Aspire 5633 and I've had it for 8 months.

Being a perfectionist, the keyboard isn't in its best state and I would love to clean it.

Is there a safe, idiot-proof way to thoroughly clean the keyboard, the touch pad and the stickers around it (the stickers are starting to peel off in the most unattractive way)?

You use canned air to clean out from under the keys themselves.

You use 91%+ rubbing alcohol and cotton balls/q-tips to clean the surface of the keys.

You use a damp microfiber cloth to clean all other surfaces of your laptop

As to the stickers... just take them off. I've always hated the blasted things anyway. It's a laptop not a race car, if they want to advertise with my laptop they can pay me for the space.

I've got a really wicked bout of carpal tunnel syndrome going on in my right wrist and elbow. It actually woke me up twice last night with pangs of discomfort and pain.

Productivity & the Big Project Myth Solution

Job advertisements in newspapers and on the internet asking for IT professionals usually tout large projects as the sole reason for wanting an IT professional in the first place. A programmer, system analyst or system tester must have had experience in large corporate projects and the larger the better.

Many businesses, in Australia at least, see IT departments as a liability and a necessary evil so as little money as necessary is thrown into IT infrastructure where other areas of a business, for example the Engineering Department or the Buyers Department, get inundated with large budgets. IT Departments have to justify their existence with staff time sheets and charging internal clients for IT solutions.

Although grandiose backslapping projects bring in the money and look good on a resume these projects do not necessarily improve the expediency with which a company does business. In fact large corporate systems can increase the workload where more data is required to be captured by the users, call center staff and so on.

Throughout my consultancy career my main philosophy has been to improve the users or developer’s work environment by making their job easier. As well as large projects I have developed many small applications that took anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour to create but have saved employees anywhere between hours to months of hard tedious work.

Those employees who benefit from many of these small applications are usually confined to the IT department itself where users have direct access to an IT professional who can put together a small custom application during their spare time. Those outside of the IT department though are usually left to their own devices and this is where end users and macro recordable office suites or keyboard capturing software comes into play.

What begins as simple macro instructions within an application built by an end user eventually become large complex and business critical applications held together with chewing gum and string. As news of the application spreads throughout the department more demands are made upon the hapless user who provided the solution and ergo their stress is increased as they maintain the original solution with all its additions whilst trying to cater for a stream of new requests. When a system grows to the point of being unmanageable the department can then justify the expense of a business case which the IT department will then accept, all too often though the business case specifies an upgrade of the original system, a band-aid solution as the ultimate solution, where a total rewrite is really the only solution.

There would be more control over such a situation if IT departments provided small applications for individuals and groups, and companies realised the benefits of incorporating the IT department more into its overall infrastructure instead of annexing it to the companies structure as if it were a parasitic necessity.
