What keyboard character is used the most?

I am very curious about this! I have spent many many nights awake thinking about the most used character/letter/symbol used on a computer keyboard! What is it?? Which one is it?

On my machine I would say the following (e, a, o, k, s, d, c, h, the direction keys, backspace, enter, and space). I say those keys as they are the only ones on my keyboard that are faded. The glossy sheen on my space bar says that I may use that more then any other key (which makes sense since the space bar died on my last keyboard first).

10 Different Ways of Learning Chinese Characters

Summary

There are over 3500 frequently-used Chinese characters (Zhang, 1997). Learning them has always been regarded as a challenging task not only for Non-Chinese-Background-Speaking (NCSB) learners but also for Chinese native speakers when they start their first language acquisition. This article summarises 10 different ways of learning characters practised in the field of teaching Chinese as a Foreign or Second Language. It is hoped that NCBS learners can benefit from them by trying them out.

Key words: Teaching Chinese as a Foreign or Second Language, learning Chinese characters, language games

1. The Radical and Stroke Sequential Approach

The traditional way of teaching Chinese characters is to direct learners' attention to the radicals of which each character is structured. This is followed by an illustration of the stroke orders of the character. The Pinyin Romanisation and English are listed alongside the characters, and then learners are asked to pronounce the characters or add Pinyin Romanisation to the characters listed. This traditional radical or stroke sequential approach to characters is still alive in the sphere of teaching Chinese to foreign learners and the best examples can be found in the textbooks by Lu (2001), Liu, et al. (2002), Zhang, et al. (2004) and Ma (2005).

2. The Systematic Approach

The most common practice in teaching Chinese characters to foreign learners is to teach them the form, the pronunciation and the meaning of a character first, followed by demonstrating its stroke orders. However, this makes the learning of characters hard to foreign learners (Zhang, 1997), as unlike the alphabetic-based language, Chinese writing is an ideographic system where the form, pronunciation and meaning of a character are integrated; therefore, there is a need to separate reading of characters from writing. Zhang (1997) advocates an approach where the teaching of characters follows a systematic way of learning the basic strokes and stroke orders of single characters first, and then compound characters. The whole idea of this approach to the teaching of characters is expressed in the book entitled Rudiments of Chinese Character Writing (Zhang, 1997).

3. The OVAL-Writing Approach

OVAL-Writing is an innovated approach to the learning of Chinese characters. It is specially designed for Non-Chinese-Speaking-Background (NCSB) learners, allowing NCSB beginners to accelerate their learning curve and fast track their mastery of Chinese characters (Ren, 2004a). The 5-letter acronym stands for Observing, Visualising, Articulating, Listening and Writing respectively. This approach intends to combine the learner's visual, auditory and kinaesthetic senses together aiming for character retention which is away from the traditional focus of learning characters that is on character recognition and memorisation (Ren, 2004b).

4. The Integrative Perceptual Approach

This approach is based on the phenomenographic theory developed by Marton and Booth (1997). It requires the learning of Chinese characters closely associated with the learner's own language use and experience. Characters are taught in clusters rather than in isolation. Teachers use similarities and variations among related characters in the clusters to highlight and emphasise crucial aspects of Chinese characters such as their structural features, written form and pronunciation  (Tse, et al ., 2006).

5. The Story-Reading Approach

Unlike most of the textbook writers concentrating on the learning of modern Chinese characters, Wang and Gao (2003) focus their attention on classical Chinese character phrases originated from ancient Chinese stories. They select stories from the classical literature and make the title of the stories by using the key character phrases originated from these stories. They also add pictures to these stories to help learners understand each story contained as well as the title of the story. This will not only help with learners master the key character phrases but also know the origin of these characters and the stories behind these set phrases.

6. The Game Approach

This is a very popular way of teaching foreign learners Chinese characters. This approach centres the whole class on learning characters through playing various games such as crosswords (Yan and Fu, 2005), passing the message, TV game shows, 20-Questions (Yao and McGinnis, 1989) or using flashcards to identify Chinese characters (Fuary and Kesseler, 2006).

7. The Picture-Matching Approach

This is a visual-dominated approach where learners are exposed to various pictures with characters listed alongside. They can play picture cards (Guan, 1996) or picture-matching games (Li and Xie, 2002) where students are asked to identify characters through matching them with the pictures or numbers written in the picture. The pronunciation of the characters is practised simultaneously The most comprehensive dealing of the picture-dominant approach is covered in the 2-volume textbook entitled Chinese Characters in Pictures by Wang and Zheng (2005) in which approximately 200 characters are explained in pictures. In this approach, the stroke orders of the characters are illustrated first followed by the Pinyin Romanisation and the meaning of the characters in English. Very often the pictures contain characters with extended examples of how these characters can be used within a sentence.

8. The Computer Keyboard Approach

HaFaLa Chinese is an animated fast learning software (8 CD-ROMs) developed by Shanghai Taotu Animation Technology Co. Ltd. It works on any computer to provide users with opportunities to learn Chinese characters. This software consists of most frequently used individual characters searchable through strokes, stroke orders, Pinyin Romanisation and English meanings. It can be used as a dictionary to aid learners in learning any printed Chinese textbooks.

9. The Nintendo DS Approach

My Chinese Coach for Nintendo DS allows users to learn Chinese characters through playing games on the Nintendo DS. Different games such as Hit-a-Word, Multiple-Choice, Whack-a-Mole, Tone-Recognition provide learners with different opportunities to learn various aspects of characters ranging from learning simplified vs. traditional forms of characters, pronunciation, meanings in English, Pinyin Romanisation, translation from English into Chinese or vice versa. Learners can also write out characters by following the correct stroke orders presented in the software. Couple with a bilingual dictionary, this application can be used as a practical tool to learn Chinese characters.

10. The iPhone Approach

The latest iPhone application Lucky Grasshopper provides a fun way of learning Chinese characters. This application uses pictures, sounds and animations to teach users stroke orders, pronunciation and meanings of characters, allowing them to master characters by touching the screen. Touching can also direct learners to different characters of their choice one at a time. This may be one of the most portable ways of learning Chinese characters. For a brief online demonstration, go to http://www.luckygrasshopper.com/ by LuckyG Media and Lucky Grasshopper (2009).

Swine Flu Vaccine alternative?

With the Swine Flu Vaccination starting today, what is the Swine Flu Vaccine alternative?

The first phase of a mass vaccination programme designed to stop the spread of swine flu has now started in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland with Wales to follow shortly. Around 27,000 people a week are now being infected with the virus in England, up sharply over the last couple of months.

Due to the speed that the virus has spread, drug companies currently do not have enough of the drug to vaccinate everyone.

What are the phases of vaccination?

The current phase of vaccinations are -

Phase 1 - Health care workers and Hospital Patients with serious diseases

Phase 2 - Pregnant Women, Asthma and Diabetes

So what can the rest of us do?

The best way to avoid contracting the virus is to follow basic hygiene rules. Make a point of not only cleaning your hands regularly but also cleaning areas such as the computer keyboard, light switches and the telephone.

To make this easier you can purchase a Swine Flu pack. The pack contains the Worlds First Dry on Contact Spray, which can be used on computer keyboards, childrens toys, work surfaces and more. The pack costs less than a tenner, a small amount considering the cost of 3 days off work.

The pulic are also being advised to consider a Family Pack

Why use a dry on contact spray?

A benefit of the spray is that there is no “wet dwell” time, meaning that users do not feel compelled to wipe the product away prior to it being effective. According to US laboratory reports, the product kills 99.99% of germs in 30-45 seconds. It also exceeds the requirements of EN1276 in Europe.

System restore won't work on my laptop and the recovery disk is built in, anyone know the keyboard code?

It's a Toshiba Qosmio F30/695lsbl - have done the key code restore before when the store showed me it but have long since forgotten it.
Thought it was Shift+F1+0+Enter but nothing's working.
Thanks to f**king Microsoft you bunch of WANKERS for updating my computer with a no good update!! Your apology email came 2 hours later - am considering legal action!!

To access the Toshiba recovery partition, power off the laptop. Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.

Note that this erases all data, and reloads all factory default software. Be sure to back up all your important personal data beforehand

My Computer Runs Slow And Needs Registry Repair

Your computer runs slow and is really aggravating. You may also be getting startup errors. You need to know how startup works so that you can correct these problems

When you start up your computer a sequence of events will take place.

1.The Power On Self Test (POST) is the first item to run. The BIOS firmware settings are used by the computer to test and make sure that the systems hardware which includes storage media,RAM,power supply and several other computer peripherals is working correctly. POST also will check to ensure that the operating system is properly installed. If any of these tests should fail a beeping sound will tell you that there is a problem.

2. After the POST tests are finished other tests are run which will ascertain that hardware such as the hard drive and video card etc are working properly. If there is any problemyou will one more get an error message.

3.The NT Loader which is usually called the boot loader or ntldr will start to run. The ntldr loads startup programs, starts the files system and will check the boot.ini file to find where the operating system should be uploaded to. Once more errors may occur if you have a damaged hard drive or Master Boot Record (MBR).

4. The next event is for ntdetect.com to identify and configure many of the computer hardware items such as the mouse, keyboard, hard drive, video adapter etc.

5. The next step is for ntoskml.exe to load the Windows kernel which is the main component of the Windows operating system. Once ntoskml.exe and the hardware files have been loaded successfully the computer registry is then consulted in order to load the programs which will keep the system running properly.

6. The next step to run is smss.exe which is the Session Manager. This allows Windows to go to GUI mode from text mode.

7. Now the Windows operating system is in place and controls the computer. You can now log in and start using the machine. Under normal conditions booting up should take 2 to 3 minutes or less. However if any of the above listed steps should fail the startup could be very prolonged or the computer may freeze and will not boot at all.

Common failure signs are:

1. During the initial POST(Power On Self Test) the computer emits a beeping sound and will freeze or shut down.

2. The computer screen remains blank with nothing displayed on it.

3. The text which scrolls during bootup freezes.

4. A blue screen or stop error is shown on the screen and the computer stops running.

5. During startup you have an error message shown and the machine freezes.

6. An error message is shown and the boot is aborted.

7. Windows is loading message remains on display but the system will not load.

Troubleshooting startup problems and when your computer runs slow depends greatly on finding at what time in the sequence of events the error happened.

Guideline For Troubleshooting Startup

1.If an error message displays you may use the text and error codes in the message to determine the source of the trouble. The Microsoft knowledge base or other help sites may be of assistance to you with this.

2.If the problem occurs during the text mode of the boot up sequence take a look at the last few lines of text to find which process succeeded. If you are fortunate you may get some information about the failed processes also.

3.If the "Windows is loading" keeps on display or if the screen goes completely blank try:

A. Wait for a few minutes to see if the problem will resolve itself.

B. If it does not then press the Escape key (ESC) a few times.

C. If you still do not have success try hitting the reset button in order to hard boot the system.

D. Next try booting the computer in safe mode. To try this press the F8 key just after POST and choose SAFE MODE from the options which are displayed.

E. If there is a mouse cursor showing on the screen move the mouse to determine if the cursor will move. If the cursor does move this suggests that windows is loading. If it does not move you have a system freeze and should try hard booting the computer.

If your computer runs slow and has Windows XP startup problems the common reason is a bloated corrupt registry. Over a period of time as the machine is used the registry accumulates many pieces of files and data which are of no use. These come from incompletely uninstalled programs, programs which did not install properly, old drivers, unused shortcuts, adware, spyware and numerous other sources.

The operating system is greatly slowed down as it trys to access the files needed to run the computer in this corrupt registry. The easy way to eliminate this problem when your computer runs slow and has Windows XP startup problems is to use one of the good windows XP registry cleaners.

Windows XP registry cleaners can be downloaded from the internet for your use. Good windows registry repair software will first offer you a free scan to find what errors you have in your computer registry. You can check the results of this scan and decide whether you want to use the repair function of the windows reg cleaner to fix the problems.

We recommend that you do this and do not attempt to do the job manually. You should learn how to do your registry repair the safe way. One wrong item removed by mistake can cause you problems even to the point that your computer will completely cease to function. You can get a free scan from the top registry cleaners to correct registry errors.

How do you memorize the keys on a computer Keyboard?

I need to memorize all the keys on the keyboard (the whole main area: letters, numbers, all symbols, etc.) for a test. There's is going to be a blank keyboard that I will have to fill in. So I was wondering if anyone had either some cool tips, or a rhyme, or some strategy for memorizing the keys easily. If you can help thank you so much!
Thanx :)

really the only way is to use the keyboard again and again. I can literally type with my eyes closed, but i've been writing stories and things on the pc since i was 8. After 10 years, you get to remember where the keys are.

Are Umpc Dialkeys Too Small and Fiddly?

The people of today are raving over the Ultra Mobile Pc. They provide you with many of the features that you would expect from a laptop such as internet connectivity and the ability to watch movies or connect with your peers from anywhere provided you have Internet connectivity. These tiny computers are useful in the extreme. However, their small size gives rise to a number of problems.

One of the problems inherent to UMPCs is the issue of trying to type without a keyboard. The touch screen makes it easy to tap out your emails with your fingers or with the provided stylus. However, there are some problems to this also. The screens are only seven inches on a typical UMPC, and this means that there is very limited space in which to fit in a keyboard.

The software designers could choose to design a keyboard utility that covers up the screen underneath, making it hard to see what you are actually doing, or can design a keyboard utility that does not hide the screen but which can be hard to use because of the small size of each of the keys.

Since the brilliant designers at Microsoft know that no one really likes to have to use a stylus to operate their PCs (even their tiny computer), DialKeys is a standard installation on UMPCs. The program was the brainchild of a company called Fortune Fountain Ltd. It is an overlay program with a Split Keyboard that is designed to allow the UMPC user to type with their thumbs.

Using thumbs only to type on a standard QWERTY keyboard layout is odd enough. However, the DialKeys application takes it one step farther by transforming how the keyboard looks. The application displays as two quarter-circles, one in each lower corner of the screen, allowing you to type with your thumbs without twisting and turning your hand rather unnaturally. This allows you to type without changing the way that you hold the device. This is an innovative way to typing in general.

Unfortunately for many, especially many men, the DialKey application could be a hassle if you have large fingers, just like many typing solutions. The unique layout of the keyboard on the screen also makes it a little bit harder to use a stylus, which can be bothersome if you are trying to type in a hurry. If your fingers hit the keys well, however, the DialKeys program has plenty of options and features to help you find it extremely functional and interesting.

One of the great things about DialKeys is that it is, to some extent, customizable. For example, you can change the color of the DialKeys application from black to white and back again. However, this does not just pertain to the looks. Switch back and forth to help alleviate the twin troubles of dark screens at night and glare from the sun during the day. Switching back and forth means that you can do away with both the problems.

One other way of modifying DialKeys for your UMPC is to change the opacity of the keyboard the way it shows up on the screen. This allows you to see what is going on under the keyboard, and while it can be distracting for some people, it could be quite a blessing.

One cool feature of DialKeys is that there are no multi-function keys for which you would normally use the Shift key to change the meaning. Instead there are three different sets of keys, including the normal letters keypad, the numbers keypad, and a special punctuation keypad with lots of extra symbols and bits of punctuation to help you express yourself perfectly.

It might take some time to get used to the keyboard layout for DialKeys, but once this becomes a habit, you realize that it is one of the quicker and better onscreen keyboards available as long as you do not need to use the number, punctuation, or command features too often. For those who need more than the basics to hand when typing, however, it can be a pain to switch between the screens in order to get the symbols that they need.

Getting the DialKeys set up to your standards is vital if you want to make the most of it. If the color or opacity are not working for you, then you will not get the best experience out of your UMPC and will find the DialKeys application harder to use and harder to appreciate. The DialKeys application may be a bit of a challenge when you are starting out, but it is much quicker than learning how to type in the first place, and worth learning. For some people it is even possible to touch-type with the DialKeys application, meaning that the opacity can be turned way down. Here is an application which may not be perfect but which gives great value for money.

All About Playstation 3

Fasten your seatbelt and get set for the ultimate entertainment explosion!

Playstation-3 is a gaming experience that is beyond anything known today. It is a computer entertainment system that unleashes a brilliant, high-definition entertainment experience which is incomparable. It delivers the next generation of interactive entertainment.

Playstation-3 is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment. A major feature, that sets it apart from its predecessors, is its unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network. Other main features of the console include its huge multimedia capabilities, connectivity with the playstation portable and its use of a next generation optical media, blu-ray disc, as its primary storage medium.

There are models of four types that are usually referred to by the size of their included hard disc drive; 20, 40, 60 and 80 gigabyte models. All retail packages include one or two six axis controllers, a video/stereo audio, a power cable, a USB cable, output cable, and an ethernet cable(20, 60 and 80GB only).

Numerous accessories for the console have been developed for the system, including the wireless six axis controller, the BD remote, the playstation eye camera and the upcoming play TV DVB-T tuner/digital video recorder. The system has bluetooth 2.0, gigabit ethernet, USB 20 and HDMI 1.3a built-in on all models. Wi-Fi networking is also built-in on the 40, 60 and 80GB models while a flashcard reader (which is compatible with memory stick, SD/MMC and compact flash/micro drive media) is built-in on 60 and 80GB models.

The playstation-3 version of the `Xross Media Bar` includes nine categories of options. These include users, settings, photo, music, video, game, network, playstation network and friends. Also it includes the ability to store various master and secondary user profiles, manage and explore photos with or without a musical slide-show, play music and copy audio CD tracks to an attached storage device, play movies and video files from the hard-disk drive, an optional USB mass storage or flashcard, or an optical disc (blu-ray disc or DVD-video), compatibility for a USB keyboard and mouse and a full web browser supporting in/compatible file download function.

The friends menu allows mail with emoticon and attached picture features and video chat which requires an optional playstation eye or eye toy webcam. The network menu allows online shopping through the playstation store.

The 80GB playstation-3 provides ample hard drive storage space for games and other entertainment content from the game network. The free membership in playstation network allows you to play free games online, allows downloading of special content and be in touch with your friends. The inbuilt Wi-Fi allows for flawless connection with your network. It includes hard drive for all photos, music and personal videos.

The six axis wireless controller gives more precision and freedom during game play. The picture quality is pristine with the capability of full high-definition resolution at 1080p. The built-in blu-ray disc drive provides for high-definition games and entertainment.

Sony has also announced the dualshock3, a controller with the same design and function as the six axes, but with vibration capability included. It was released in Japan in november 2007, while a spring 2008 release date has been scheduled for Europe and North America.

The playstation-3, at first, received generally unfavorable reviews like late, expensive and incompatible, but after a series of price drops and the release of several quality titles, the system has begun to garner better reviews. Their motor sport game is wildly popular and their list of games is getting larger and longer.

With its cutting-edge technology, the high-end Sony playstation-3`s larger hard drive and ability to play playstation-2 games makes it a worthwhile alternative to cheaper models.

Then one day, after years of reading them, I was composing a sentence I wanted to make very sure the reader knew was a joke—and so I did it. Slowly, those little guys crept into my emails. I started becoming enamored of the more ...
