We can have a recession and we can have a credit crunch, we can lose our jobs and our homes but despite all this, there will always be a market for gadgets that seem pretty pointless to many but are the must-haves of other people's lives. Inventors make their living from product design and not all of it is useful - some of it is and some of it is just... stuff.

At the Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the 2009 range of useless toot - sorry, fancy gadgets - have been displayed. 3D televisions from Sony and Panasonic will give you something to do while you're out of work - dodging the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park or Angelina Jolie's legs flying through Tomb Raider. It's just a pity you can't get away with not wearing the idiot 3D glasses while you watch it.

3D Playstation 3's were on show along with 3D games like car racing.

Product design is also about to bring us glasses that show films on the inside as demonstrated at the show. Watching a film from inside your glasses means that you will you be able to watch them anywhere - at work, on the bus, at the mother in law's etc. Think of the advantages to this one!

An organic light emitting diode, or OLED, was also demonstrated in the form of a hand-sized flexible colour screen. How did any of us ever get by without a flexible screen to hand?

The show's hottest product design was said to be the Pre - Palm's latest cell phone handset to rival Apple's iPhone complete with touch screen and qwerty keyboard. A camera, wi-fi and GPS are also on the phone. In typical James Bond style there is also a wristwatch that doubles up as a phone.

Product design ahs also bought us such useful gadgets as the WooWee Spyball should we want to randomly spy on people, a cell phone that can project video and pictures onto a larger screen and a USB on a flexicord that doesn't get tangled. Far be it from me to say so, but these all seem like a waste of money!

That said, the show has highlighted some things for which an application would be worth finding. We have the semi-transparent AMOLED screen which will be used for making 'heads-up' displays in cars and a mobile phone with a foldable AMOLED screen meaning that you can achieve a much better display.

From a purely girly point of view product design has brought us some revolutionary items that will make our lives undoubtedly easier. Eye drops are now on the market that will cause our eye lashes to grow longer and thicker. Now I like the sound of this one!

For those who hate early mornings there is the robot that serves you breakfast and for those with allergies there is a fake cat. Apparently, it comes with all the de-stressing benefits of having a pet but without the mess and allergens.

So, it would seem it makes no difference that it makes no difference how little spare money there is floating around in the world or how rubbish some ideas are, there will always be a market for trivia.

Can I hook up my PS3 wireless keyboard to my HP computer to use.?

I was wondering if i could hoop up my wireless keyboard(logitech) to the Hp to uses a regular computer like typing (not to play ps3 on the computer!)

What kind of wireless keyboard is that?

If you have the wireless keyboard with a USB dongle then then yes.

If you have the bluetooth wireless keyboard then you probably need to buy a bluetooth receiver for your HP computer

Ps3 Consoles - The Lexus Of Game Consoles

I can't speak specifically fro the 80 gig but I know what the hardware differences are and I can address them.

The most important thing is games. At first, it was hard to make a case for the Playstation with so few exclusives, but now, most of the big third party releases are multi-platform and the PS3 Consoles has just as many exclusives as the 360. If you just can't live without Halo or Gears of War, then the PS3 Consoles can't help you just as much as the 360 can't help you with Little Big Planet or Metal Gear Solid 4. I have noticed that some games do look better on the 360 but the difference is really negligible, and I feel the other advantages far outweigh this.

Of the PS3 Consoles games, I recommend Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Warhawk, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Grand Theft Auto IV.

As far as Downloadable games, there are some really solid innovative titles. PixelJunk Monsters is as addictive as tower defense games go but also really beautiful and mesmerizing. If you have a good 1080p hdtv you will appreciate the intricate detail in such a simple game. Echochrome is also a really innovative puzzle game. I also enjoy Operation creature feature as a good game to show friends who are less into games. There are many others and almost all have a free demo so you can try it out.

These downloads are all available via the playstation network which is the great online component of PS3 Consoles. Before the PS3 Consoles I had never done online gaming, my computer was too slow and I didn't want to pay online fees or for extra peripherals. The PS3 Consoles made it really easy to connect to the PSN. I just set the wifi to connect to my router (all current models of the PS3 have built in Wifi) and since it's free, I didn't hesitate to sign up. I know most people talk about the PSN being inferior to Xbox Live but I don't know what more I could ask for, I can play games online, set up a buddy list, send messages and pictures, chat with or without video, download movies, demos, trailers and full games. I don't really care to do social networking through my game console but if you like, the much delayed playstation home is supposed to provide a virtual space to meet and chat using 3d avatars. My only complaint in the PSN is that the download speed seems pretty slow.

All of the non-gaming features are accessed through the xrossmedia bar which is extremely easy and intuitive to use.

Now for the media connectivity. It's awesome! The model I have has a built in card reader, but with the new models, you can purchase the PS3 Consoles Media Hub+ which will not only add 2 USB ports but also a Memory Card Reader. I always use the PS3 Consoles to show family pictures and slideshows, it's fast and easy to use and you can rotate and zoom on the fly. It's just as easy to watch movies from your digital cameras, and listening to MP3s from a CD or flash drive is enhanced by some great visualizers.

The PS3 Consoles is pretty forgiving with peripherals, I have a Mac Keyboard hooked up to it and a Jabra bluetooth headset. The hard drive can easily be switched out with one from any company as long as its the right size. The system itself will guide you through the swap out process. the controller is the same great layout from Playstation 2 with an added home button, and R2 and L2 have become triggers. I recently bought RealTriggers which help but I used it for a year an a half without.

I can't say enough about how awesome Blu-ray is. I hear a lot of people talking about upscaled DVD being just as good, but if you ever see any blu-ray on a 1080p screen, you can appreciate the difference. The image is so clean and crisp, even the sound is noticeably better. The jump in image quality is jaw dropping. I especially recommend Transformers, 300, Casino Royale, Spider-Man 3, Planet Earth, and Sunshine [Blu-ray] as great films to Showcase the Blu-rays capabilities. That being said, the PS3 Consoles's DVD upscaling is also good. If you've ever played a DVD on a PS2, the same controls apply. Fast forward, rewind, skip, play, stop are all easy, it's just a shame there's no dedicated top menu button.

Overall, this system is great. A bit pricey but totally worth the cost (especially compared to 360 plus the added price of online fee and overpriced proprietary peripherals). An essential part of any modern home theater system.

Hard Drive Update:
I just upgraded the hard drive on my PS3 from 60 to 250 gigs. It could not have been easier. I purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400.4 ST9250827AS - Hard drive - 250 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-300 - 5400 rpm - buffer: 8 MB. I chose seagate because of the price and because PS3 comes with a seagate by default but any brand should do. C-net has a great step by step tutorial on the specifics of hard drive swap. Other than backing up my data and restoring it (I used a separate external hard drive) the swap out process itself took less than 10 minutes.

Now I'm downloading PSN games willy nilly and don't have to worry about running out of space.

an interesting side note, you can use any external hard drive that is formatted FAT32.

How old was your toddler when they started using the computer?

- mine is 3, he can mouse around, play games that involve the mouse, can't use the keyboard.
- did yours put his/her face too close to the screen?
- did he/she have tantrums when you would pull them away from it?

My son was 3. They had computer classes at his preschool. I thought it would be great to have him learn so young. What a mistake! He's 13 now and obsessed with the computer and video games. SO with my daughter (almost 5) we are making her wait for the game part until she's older. She can do some very basic things and I am teaching her how to send emails (b/c her dad is gone alot and that way she can communicate with him) but I want her to actually do things that require some thought, creativity and actually moving around. Computers are great and have their time and place but I think kids now are using them WAY too much.

Diagnostic Computer Software And Programs

Most people do not realize that they have a problem with the operating system for a personal computer until they get an error message when the computer is turned on one day. Before the computer system reaches this stage, the computer user might notice that the system has slowed considerably over a period of weeks and that the keyboard or other input devices work incorrectly and gibberish is written across the computer screen.

The error message could come in a numeric form that lists an error code or it could come with a blue screen showing on the computer monitor that alerts the user to a fatal operating error that will prevent the computer operating system from loading. A computer user might try to reboot the operating system several times with the same result. Then they might consider using a recovery disk that contains diagnostic software on it that could identify the source of the problem.

Some computer operating systems require users to access diagnostics software by repetitively hitting the F8 key on the computer keyboard. This procedure will take the operating system into a safe mode that will allow the operator to perform several diagnostics on the computer system itself. Some programs might now operate normally while in safe mode, but if the errors are found and repaired, the computer system should load normally on the next restart.

Using this type of diagnostic computer software will require an understanding of error codes and settings by which the computer operates. The user manual will have a complete listing of error codes and the list will also explain what they mean. While the computer is operating in safe mode, the operating system will offer the computer operator several choices on the computer screen that will help repair the errors that are on the hard drive of the computer.

Changes should be made sparingly to the computer while it is operating in safe mode. Any numerical changes that occur to the hard drive will directly effect the way the computer system will respond when it is restarted. Some changes will make the computer inoperable and all information on the system could be corrupted and will be unusable. Every computer user should activate the system restore option under the system icon of the control panel when they purchase the computer.

The system restore selection will allow the diagnostic software to restore the system to an earlier time, and is especially helpful when the system stops working after new software or hardware has been installed. The computer systems restore diagnostics software program is an important system tool that many users forget to start. The restore settings will make recovery of materials easier if the system stops responding due to infection by computer viruses or corrupted software.

If the diagnostics software fails to repair the system, then the user is faced with reinstalling the operating system from operating disks that are provided with each new computer system. A good rule of thumb to follow is to back up information on a daily, weekly or monthly basis to ensure that no data is lost. There are many software programs for data recovery on the market to help recover data when the operating system diagnostics programs fail to solve the problem.

Unable to use PS2 pad with PC version of FIFA 08?

Hi everyone, I'm having a real problem getting my PS2 pad to work with FIFA 08 on my PC.

I have a USB to PS2 adapter that I brought from Play.com. This works fine with any other game, but not with FIFA. The main problem is when I go into the main menu of the game, the pad just keeps scrolling through all of the bars in the menu at random! If I pull out the USB adapter it stops. Is there any way around this?

I have even tried altering the joypad file which is contained in "user" folder of the game, but with no luck. Please help. Many thanks in advance ;)

I was going to get a PS2 to PC adapter....but found so many PC joypads on ebay for 99p i bought a couple, so for two pounds I have PS2 replica joypads that work perfectly and are USB which means PC will have no trouble with them :-) )

Racing Games have never been so exciting! The technology now exists to provide realistic racing environments through the use of steering wheels with forcefeedback, LCD screens with crystal clear display and speakers delivering the right acoustics (with bass!). And of course, the ring type of gaming seat, or gaming chair (I don't call them cockpits, I'll leave this to the flight-sim people!). We've been so impressed by GranTurismo, that we've been looking for things to improve the experience of the game.

We have been testing the best steering wheels on gaming seats such as the VisionRacer and Fanatec, and now we'd like to share our findings so you can get the same experience.

Driving Force Wireless

Before we had the GT and G25 in the labs, we had so much fun with the Driving Force! For us, this was one of the devices that really started a revolution in gaming.... bye bye controller pads and keyboard! We had two people on a couch (sofa!) and one playing on a bean bag.

The Driving Force is wireless, and although I'm not a big fan of wireless devices for precision gaming, the Driving Force works fine. More importantly, the feedback you get from the device covers bumps on the roads, car crashes and traction loss.

The controller can be used on the lap, which is pretty much where it was designed for - racing from the comfort of your armchair, although you can fix it to a table or desk. The Driving Force also comes with Pedals, which is something that is really the missing piece when playing racing games.

On the PS3, we tested GranTurismo and Burnout - I have to say, the playability was much better on the PS3 than the PC, but at the end of the day we were testing the Driving Force - and I don't want this review to represent that the Driving Force was deficient in any area, it worked fine on all the games.

Summary...

The Driving Force is a fantastic product, it falls short of the G25 and GT - but its less than half the price, which more than justifies it's position (specifically being on the lap). Recommendation - buy one, have fun,   sell on ebay - then buy an upgrade!

Driving Force GT

yummy. Thats my first words on this!

This is where force feedback really comes into itself, and with the full rotation it really does give you the feel of a real wheel.

The difference we found with this wheel compared to similar priced wheels is that the steering wheel has a rubber coating, as opposed to just cheap plastic. This really gives it a realistic feel. When you play GT or Need for Speed, you really want to hammer the wheel to get the best experience, and the Logitech is good to handle it.

We initially tried the DFGT on a table, as we were in the middle of rebuilding the VisionRacer, and we'd dismantled the Fanatec kit - and we found two things. Firstly, once you've played (sorry - experienced!) a racing game with a wheel - you can't go back to a keyboard or joypad. Secondly, when you've been in a gaming seat - you can't go back to a table.... its all good. Its also easy to see why the wheel is the official wheel of Gran Turismo.

The wheel has been around for sometime now, and we're glad to say it's aged well and still current. As this product replaced the Driving Force Pro, we wont be covering that Wheel.

Summary...

Fantastic Product. I'd say its the beta version of the G25.

Logitech G25

The G25 is the next model up from the Driving Force GT. The packaging is great on these products, although the reality is that its what's inside that's important. So when you know that the pedals are made of metal (and not plastic) it gives you some idea of what to expect in the product -something that's solid and hard-wearing. This is good, but what about the playability and the experience?

What we liked to see is that the gearbox is also part of the 'evolution' of the game pad, and has been brought into the mix. Specifically, you get a D-Pad and the expected eight buttons, which is great when you need to change views on GT or program for another game.

The majority of people I know have previously preferred the automatic approach, although I'm knowing and seeing more people prefer the manual approach for the added realism, and the gearshift box supports 6 gears - one of which is reverse! Cool!

There's a choice of gear shifting modes too, so you can have sequential if this is your preference for F1, or just stay with gated gears.

Apparently the steering wheel is made from hand stitched leather - I can't confirm this other than saying the wheel looks and feels as if its come straight out of a steering wheel.

We never bothered connecting the G25 to a table - after you've experienced a gaming seat, there just isn't any going back! The real value in these components is when they're integrated with a gaming seat, 5.1 surround sound and a good LCD. Seriously, there is no going back!

In Summary...

Well, we discussed the need for feedback on the pedals for sometime, and only came to the conclusion that its nice to have and would improve the game, albeit marginally.

For realism the G25 is the way to go, although the Driving Force GT does exactly the same, albeit not quite as polished.

We'd go as far to say that the feedback electrics are quieter on the G25, rather than the DFGT - but hey, with 5.1 speakers rearing, who cares!
